Candidates can apply for the Summer Institute from all over the world. candidates who are graduates or undergraduates are encouraged to apply for the Summer International Scholarships and they can choose any subject of their interest while applying. Candidates who have US and non-US nationality can apply. No IELTS/ TOEFL is required for the summer international Scholarship Program at HLI, candidates can apply with their university English Proficiency certificates.

The Hansen Summer Institute is fully funded by the Fred J. Hansen Foundation. This includes international airfare, room and board, and all programmatic costs. If selected the only cost to participants will be the fees incurred in obtaining a passport and spending money.
HLI has initiated this program to train the young generation and decrease the community gaps by increasing long-term friendships among different communities and cultures. Young scholars will be able to use their practical experiences and enhance their skills through training and other modes of learning.

For U.S Citizens:
Candidates from any US University need to meet the following criteria for Participation:
- Upper-division undergraduate with 2 years of college/university or graduate student with a professional interest in international relations, diplomacy, international economic development or related fields.
- Students must be between the ages of 20-25 at the start of the program.
- Must have demonstrated leadership potential outside of the classroom in the community, nation,, or region.
Non-U.S Citizen:
Candidates need to meet the following criteria to participate in the Hansen Leadership Summer Exchange Program:
- Upper-division undergraduate with 2 years of college/university or graduate student with a professional interest in international relations, diplomacy, international economic development, or related fields.
- Students must be between the ages of 20-25 at the start of the program.
- Must have demonstrated leadership potential outside of the classroom in the community, nation, or region.
- Have an academic adviser verify in writing the candidate’s English proficiency
- Have a valid international passport with a U.S. visa if necessary by the time the program begins
- Preference will be given to those who have never visited the United States
