Andrew Steward Award:
The Andrew Stewart Memorial Graduate Prize is significant and unique in that is awarded in direct recognition of excellence in research at the doctoral level; it acknowledges outstanding accomplishment and potential in pursuit of new knowledge.
Financial Value:
The value of this award is $5,000.
Eligiblity Criteria:
- There are no restrictions on citizenship.
- Candidates must be full-time Doctors Students
- Students must have completed at least 24 months (2 years) in their doctoral program by April 30, 2024, and have completed no more than 6 years. For students who transferred from a master’s to a doctoral program, the time spent in the master’s program counts towards the time spent in the doctoral.
- All fields of study are eligible for funding
- A recipient may hold the award only once
- Students must be actively engaged in thesis research at the time of the award offering
- The major selection criterion of this award is research accomplishment while registered in a doctoral program at the University of Alberta (particularly originality of research potential scholarly impact, and experience and contributions to research).
- There is no minimum GPA requirement however, selection is secondarily based on academic merit
- This prize can be held concurrently with any other award, provided that the terms of that award do not disallow it.
University of Alberta Graduate Recruitment Scholarship:
The purpose of the Recruitment Scholarship is to recruit superior graduate students who have the potential to contribute to the University of Alberta’s community and research.
Value:
- Scholarships will be offered in increments of $5,000. The department may decide how many increments of $5,000 to offer a student.
- The award value varies and is indicated in the original letter of offer.
Eligibility Criteria:
The scholarship will be awarded to students who:
- Are Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or students on a study permit
- Are admitted to a doctoral or thesis-based master’s graduate degree program by the department or transferred from a master’s to a doctoral degree program
- Will be registered full-time in a doctoral degree or thesis-based master’s degree program
- Have an admission GPA of at least 3.5
Entrance Scholarships:
The purpose of this scholarship is to provide funding and support to newly admitted graduate students who were highly ranked in their department at admission.
Financial Value:
Stipend Value: $17,500 Master’s; $21,000 Doctora
Domestic students will receive an additional $7,100, international students will receive an additional $10,000 to help cover fees
Students must have a Canadian bank account and Canadian address to receive the award.
Eligiblity Criteria:
The following admission terms are eligible: January 2024, May 2024, July 2024, and September 2024
• Must be a newly admitted student in one of the above terms in a master’s or doctoral program
• Open to domestic and international students
• Open to course-based or thesis students
• Must have an Admission GPA of 3.7 or higher
• Must be full-time registered during the tenure of the award
Engagement Scholarships:
The Graduate Student Engagement Scholarship (GSES) recognizes academic achievement, leadership, community engagement, volunteerism, and/or involvement in extracurricular activities.
Financial Coverage:
The value of the scholarship at the University of Alberta is $10,000 and is paid out to the recipient in two lump sum payments.
Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible for the Graduate Scholarship program at the University of Alberta, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- No restrictions on citizenship
- Open to course-based or thesis-based study programs. All fields are eligible for funding
- Open to masters or doctoral students
- Students must be registered full-time in Fall 2024 and/or Winter 2025 terms
- A minimum of 3.5 GPA is an eligibility requirement for all applicants. The GPA will be calculated based on the current graduate program graded course work at the University of Alberta, or, if a student is newly admitted, the AGPA will be used to determine eligibility.
- The application must demonstrate leadership, community engagement, volunteerism and or involvement in extracurricular activities
- The recipient must be of African descent and self-identify as Black, African-Canadian, African-American, or Afro-Caribbean or Afro-Latino heritage
- Recipient must not hold another award or scholarship valued at $15,000 or greater during the tenure of this award (Sept 1, 2024- Aug 31, 2025)
Killam Scholarships:
Killam Scholarships are among Canada’s largest and most prestigious endowments for scholarly activities. The Killam Bequest has provided more than $60 million to the University of Alberta between the three different programs.
Financial Value:
The award is valued at up to $45,000 a year for 2 years (subject to renewal in year two of the award), plus any applicable International Graduate Differential Fee. Recipients will also receive a certificate acknowledging their award.
Eligiblity Criteria:
Candidates need to meet the following criteria for the eligiblity of Killam Scholarships:
- Offered to outstanding students registered in (up to and including the
sixth year), or admissible to, a doctoral program
If candidates transfer from a Master’s program to a Doctoral program, the number of months completed during the Master’s program will count towards the Doctoral Program. - No restrictions on citizenship. All fields are eligible for funding
- Applicants must have completed at least one year of graduate work (master’s or doctoral level) before the start of tenure; tenure may begin on May 1st or September 1st.
- Applicants should have standing (equivalent to a 3.5 GPA). The GPA for current graduate students is calculated using the current graduate program graded course work. For newly admitted graduate students or current graduate students who have no graded coursework to date, the Admission GPA (AGPA) will be used.
