Great news for candidates who want to study in England. British Council at the event of its 90th Anniversary has announced the Research Fellowship Program for International Students. British Council Partnering with the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) at the University of Edinburgh is offering a Research Fellowship Program. This is a 12-month fellowship Program in which selected fellows partner with the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) at the University of Edinburgh. British Council Research Fellowship will be started in January 2025.

British Council and its Partner institute will select the two most extraordinary post-doctoral fellows who are interested in collaborating and joining the research program at the IASH Institute for the academic year 2024. British Council will select the postdoctoral researchers based in any ODA (Official Development Assistance) recipient country where the British Council operates. This is a three-year partnership. Over the coming years, additional rounds of fellowships – starting in January 2026 and January 2027 – will be awarded as part of the same program.

Research Topic:

Research topics should be relevant to the areas of priority across Arts, Education and the English language that are outlined in our strategy, and to areas of cross-cutting strategic British Council interest such as international relations and soft power, international development and peace building, and cultural relations and cultural diplomacy.

Eligibility Criteria:

The candidates need to meet the following criteria for the eligibility of the British Council Research Fellowship Program:

• Applications from ODA-recipient countries where the British Council operates (see the list above).
• Applicants must also have been awarded a doctorate at the time of application, and normally within the last seven years (i.e. candidates should have graduated between 2017 and 2024, although earlier graduates may be eligible if they have taken significant career breaks since completing their doctorate
• if Candidates have not yet graduated, you must be able to produce a transcript, testamur, or a letter of completion/eligibility to graduate as part of your application
• Candidates do not need to have actually graduated at the time you apply).
• Candidates should not have held a permanent position at a university, or a previous Fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities.
• Those who have held temporary and/or short-term appointments are eligible to apply.
• If Candidates have taken parental leave or other time away from academia, this will not count towards the three-year limit, but Institute will ask that you provide brief details of why and for how long you were not working.

Assesmen Criteria:

Applications will be considered by an assessment panel comprised of University of Edinburgh and British Council staff. Western Union Online Fellowship Program

Assessment will take account of the extent to which candidates meet the following criteria:

• A research and/or professional background and academic record that relates to broad thematic remit of the programme, outlined above.
• A research proposal with clear potential to support the British Council’s objectives for the programme, outlined above.
• Demonstrable experience of engaging non-academic audiences and stakeholders in research (e.g. through engagement with policy makers, practitioners, artists or other public audiences).
• A clear commitment to knowledge exchange and dissemination as part of the fellowship and beyond the timeframe of the fellowship itself, based on the networks, insights and learnings developed through their research.

• Applications for the Brtish Council Research Program will be open on 29 April 2024
• Online Question Answer will be done on 21st May 2024 for the brief introduction
• Applications will be closed on 26 July 2024
• At the end of August the final candidates will be selected

How to Apply:

Candidates are advised to apply online for the British Council and Edinburgh Fellowship Program:

• Fill out the online Application Form
•   Candidates must have contacted staff at the University of Edinburgh before making your application. Their main collaborator/mentor should be named in the form below. If you list a member of staff at another university as your mentor / collaborator, your application will be rejected.
• It is the applicant’s responsibility to make contact with staff at the University of Edinburgh and to gain their agreement to act as mentor, but they do not need to provide a letter of support or reference.
• Candidiates must ensure that your referees submit their references to official email address by the deadline. Applications without references will not be considered.
